In the distance thunder rolls
Lightning pierces the sky
Rhythmic drumming of raindrops on the roof
Takes me back to my childhood
Run out to the street
Shedding thoroughly drenched clothes
Water streaking through our hairs
Neighborhood kids
Pure joy and bliss
Boys or girls, who gives a damn
Religion or color of skin
Nobody even knows what they mean
I can’t run out to the street tonight
Can’t hold the hand of the girl next door
Can’t shed my clothes
Don’t have my friends anymore
We grew up
Society stole our innocence
And taught us inhibitions
Can’t do things that fill my heart with joy
Somewhere childlike became childish
Rebukes rang loud and clear
What will people think
Became men and women
Hindus and Muslims
Christians and Jews
Black and White
Or tinges of Yellow and Brown
We don’t play together anymore
Can’t walk holding my friend’s hand
What will people think
Grown ups we are
Left humanity somewhere
Down the lane
Inhibitions killed purity of our hearts
Afraid of ourselves, we are
What will people think guides us more
Unhappy, gladly pay psychiatrists to find a cure
Raindrops still pounding on the roof
Threw my inhibitions out the door
Ran out to the street getting thoroughly drenched
Singing like a lark loud and clear
Curious faces pressed to the windows
Don’t give a damn to what people thinks
For once I am back to my childhood
For once I have torn apart
The shackles of inhibition
For once I am free
Exactly!

Hope to see you.Ohh! I loved to play in the rain when I was a child. I wish I could capture that carefree attitude again 🙂
I would like to invite you to my monthly blog party taking place this weekend.

Thanks again. Glad that you liked the poem.
“What will people think” really pulls us backward.
