The land of the free and the home of the brave does not feel too welcoming at this time. Lady Liberty does not seems to be extending her hands any more to the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Rather the poor, huddled masses of the country were hoodwinked by the promise of erecting a wall to keep other poor, huddled masses out from this country. I wholeheartedly support a fair immigration policy, a process that is legal. It is not fair that every few years an amnesty be granted to people who are not legal residents. That’s a mockery of the law. But what stops the elected legislature to make a law to take care of the issue once for all. Is it because without those immigrants, the life of the rich as they know it won’t be the same. Will making a fair immigration law severely impact the lifestyle of the rich and the powerful?
But I digress. I am not feeling very welcoming for last couple of weeks. Just as I think that the nastiness of the election is past and we can slowly go back to be normal again, there comes a tweet from the POTUS elect. Like a pouting child who always thinks that he/she has been misjudged or mistreated, every single event that pierces his thin skin becomes a rallying point for his tweet and a battlecry for his hard nosed followers to come rallying for him. Those tweets are not allowing the country to heal. Some silence from his tweets are most welcome. He has won the election and he is most welcome to govern. That’s his prerogative, he is welcome to it. Just stop this circus.
People are fearful of changes, what change would bring. I think one should welcome change but needs to be on guard to ensure that rights are not trampled. On that note, for week forty four of my fifty two weeks journey with the letter “W”, I chose WELCOME as the starting word of my poem. Hope my dear readers will welcome the poem.
