Where we live, we are surrounded by woods. I can see majestic redwoods from my backyard. I can drive few miles from my home north, south or west and lose myself in forests of California redwoods. There are other trees also, many oaks, but majority of these are redwoods. Looking up at some of them make me wonder how small I am. Off course, the logging industry and developers, if they had their way, would have taken care of these woods long back . For the bounty that we enjoy today, my hats off to John Muir, whose vision long back had helped start a movement saving many of these woods for posterity to enjoy.
We do need a rational policy of harnessing our natural resources for the benefit of mankind. That includes taking care of the environment we have inherited. Only when we preserve and replenish the resources we have, we will be able to leave a world to our children where they will have a life better than us. If our greed destroys our natural resources, we will leave a desert of a world to our next generation.
On this halfway mark of my fifty two weeks journey with “W”, I therefore dedicate my poem to “Woods”. I could not think of a better word starting with “W” to celebrate the completion of half of my journey.
