Dragonfly

Sunrays filtering through her translucent wings,
As she rose effortlessly,
What a beauty she was,
Pure and unspoiled,
As I ran after her,
Oblivious,
She hopped from flower to flower,
Oh such a beautiful day,
Shiny and bright,
Such a joy it was,
To be with the
Dragonfly in flight.

Why did you steal my
Childhood from me,
You, who dress in piety,
Those lips that proclaim the
Name of God incessantly,
How can it hide teeth so sharp,
Shredding me to pieces,
You who proclaim special days
For children, women and mothers,
Speak of the divine and of heaven,
Did you ever think of hell,
When you stole my childhood
From me and left me to rot,
In your hell.

The wings are now torn,
No more translucent,
They don’t reflect
the sunlight no more,
Its limp body shaking,
The dragonfly lies in the
Palm of my hand,
I close my fist,
Darkness.
There goes a monster,
He says,
Piously calling God,
And
Praying for my salvation.

Ah, do you notice
The dark shadows
Of sin
As the saints
March in.

Thursday Tidbits: Most Surprising Thing

Not the post I had in mind to write when I got up today morning.  However news that I received through social media first thing in the morning last week, not once but twice, and one of them today morning, made me change my mind

Whenever I have faced emotional issues, I have found myself going back to reading the Indian epic Mahabharata.  Its stories had helped to calm my mind, providing solace and answers to many questions I have in my mind. It’s amazing that an epic that was written thousands of years back are replete with stories addressing issues that are contemporary.

Today morning as I woke up and looked at my Whatsapp messages, I was greeted with a message from on of my friend back home in India regarding the death of one of my ex-colleague.  He was in the ICU for an week prior to his death.  Another ex-colleague who was admitted to the same hospital around that time had passed away couple of days. Bloodhounds are running amok

‘The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;’ – WB Yeats

They come in ones, they come in twos
They come in hordes, they come in groups
Spears, knives and swords are old history
Now they all have guns to create misery
Knights they are not, bravery and chivalry is out the door
Cowards are they, they are not bothered by lore
They have supporters all around claiming guns don’t kill
Those politicians, masquerading righteous saints, up on the Hill
Shedding crocodile tears and observing moments of silence
When innocent lives are snuffed out by acts of dastardly violence
Bloodhounds are running amok emboldened by their backing
Innocence is the victim when pretentious fools refuse to enact ruling

This poem is in response to Jane Dougherty’s A Month (November) with Yeats Challenge day Eight
